• Oven Baked Chex Mix Recipe

    dscf7605Makes about 12 cups

What’s your favorite tidbit to pick out of the Chex Mix?

It’s a good thing I clipped this recipe from the cereal box a few years ago. I noticed this year (and maybe this was true in recent years too) the recipe for Chex Mix included only a set of microwave directions. I’m a little funny about using the microwave to “bake” something. I’ve never tried making this in the microwave, but knowing what I know about roasting or baking I predict Chex Mix baked in an oven tastes better than Chex Mix stirred in the microwave. It does take a little longer, but that’s a wash in my opinion, because either way you have to cool the mix before eating.  If you want  microwave instructions just look on the back of a Chex cereal box. By the way, this recipe works perfectly fine with a store-brand Chex-type cereal if you so desire.

    6 tablespoons butter
    2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    1 1/2 teaspoons seasoned salt
    3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 teaspoon onion powder
    3 cups Corn Chex cereal
    3 cups Rice Chex cereal
    3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
    1 cup mixed nuts
    1 cup bite-size pretzels
    1 cup bagel chips

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. In an ungreased large roasting pan, melt butter in the oven. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir in chex cereals, mixed nuts, pretzels, and bagel chips until coated. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread on paper towels until cooled. Store in an airtight container.

thanks for the recipe, i too was amazed that no oven recipe is offered on the chex website or on the 2008 box.

Thanks so much! I was astonished that the boxes only had the microwave instructions, and thought for sure their website would still have the oven-baked instructions! Ugh – I’m sending them a complaint, but a compliment goes to you for posting this!! I really appreciate it! I don’t even want to try microwaving it. Yuck!

Thank you!!!! I could not find my old recipe card anywhere! I have tried The Mix both ways and it definitely tastes better when done in a real oven!

You’re welcome Rebecca. This recipe has been the hit of my blog – much to my (pleasant) surprise. If you don’t mind sharing, what was the microwave chex mix like – how did it taste and did it have the same crunch?

    4. Rebecca says Feb 11th 2009 3:25 pm

The crunch of the microwave version was good. However, the oven version beats it hands down. The taste was still the same except for the nuts. The slow oven roasting made such a positive difference in the taste of the nuts. The best part of the slow oven roasting is that the entire house is filled with that buttery, garlicy, Worcestershiry aroma. Again, thank you for posting this on your website.

I am on here for the exact same reason! I bought the boxes to make the Chex Mix ( I remember being in my early teens and just eating this stuff like it was going out of stock), and was so shocked seeing a microwave recipie ! I am definatly not doing that.
I found some recipes on other sites which asked for a entire stick of butter, and without the garlic and onion salt (which I don’t recall using when I made it) but yet with extra seasoned salt. I think that was the original recipie. And that the recipie you have is the one from the chex Mix bag that I don’t care for, tastes different to me. So now I am confused ! lol
I think I will just made both recipies to see which one is the recipie I remember eating as a child.
I am bound and determined to find my chex Mix ! :)

        Stephanie,

When/if you find a different chex mix recipe that fits the flavor profile you remember, post a comment and maybe we can share the recipe? Others might be thinking the same way you are?

I was giggling reading all of the posts as it’s obvious why we “all” flocked to this site – - Unbelievable that the Chex box offers microwave instructions only. Thanks for posting the original!!

Also – just a note that your recipe “IS” in fact the original as my mother has been maiking Chex Mix since back when it was an “underground” recipe and not even posted on the box. It has always been made with onion powder and all of the ingredients you list above!

I’m happy to have the recipe here for you. I clipped it off a box probably 20 years ago?

I do mine like the above recipes…but also add some celery salt…. in fact..if I cut the Lawrys a bit….I add a good teap of the celery salt….I love that taste with it all.

I swear the “original” recipe did not have the bagel chips; I don’t even remember them being available in the 50s.

Yours is the same recipe I use, except I add 1/2 t cayenne pepper to spice it up a bit.

Can olive oil be substituted for the butter? It would be so much better for your health and should give it good flavor.
Just wasn’t sure if everything would crisp up as well.

I think olive oil would work great for this recipe. I wouldn’t use an expensive, extra-virgin oil, and one could always mix the butter and olive oil (1/2 and 1/2) to try it out. The oil will create the crispy. I used unsalted butter, but would adjust the salt to taste. Let me know how it turns out.

I have been looking for the oven baked on the chex website and everything was microwaved. Personally i is disturbing to think that everything is going to the microwave. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this recipe! My Dad used to make this every Christmas during the 1960′s. I wanted to take over the tradition and was looking for the “original” as a start. I don’t think the 6o’s version had bagel chips, but this is close enough.
